I was packing for a trip home from Florida a few nights ago and pulled out this Penn State pullover and I thought “hey, when did I see this before?”. Now, I have about 80-100 Penn State articles of clothing but, because I have a freakish memory, I instantly knew.
It was 2012 and my son was a senior year at Abington High School and thinking about his future. We had a father-son trip to Penn State that October. Lots of windshield time to talk about life. We had a great, perspective-filled weekend.
He decided on Penn State and started in August 2013 but it didn’t go as planned. He had a brutal major (Chemical Engineering) and was more of introvert, so he was a bit lost being away from home. He walked away from college for a stretch, re-thought things, changed majors, flipped the script. The story now is good. He’s doing great in life and career.
Nine years later I’m packing this pullover and I realize: comes at you hard and fast; few things can be truly scripted or planned. What you hope and expect to happen doesn’t always happen as planned, and that’s ok. It’s what happens next is what truly matters.
