Over the course of your career, some “friends” and colleagues will turn on you.
– They’ll resent your career growth.
– They’ll mock your accomplishments.
– They’ll challenge your leadership.
– They’ll question your character.
This isn’t about you. It’s about them.
You could ignore the scuttlebutt but my approach has been to challenge objectively and without emotion. Though tough, do your best to honor their perspective and seek to understand them. Some will admit and apologize (and this can improve relationships with them) while others will refuse to engage.
Regardless of the outcome, you’ve shown your willingness to understand them while affirming your character and leadership. In the end, never apologize for your success that was earned through hard work, ethics and integrity.
